The Future of the European Union, Patrick Nixon
Major
challenges to the future of Europe lie ahead. If the great
experiment succeeds, it will create an economic, political
and military force to pose real challenges to the United States,
with its enlargement to 25 countries and a population approaching
500 million. Expansion will add 23% to the EU's land area
and bring in 75 million additional citizens, with a combined
economy of $9.3 trillion, approaching that of the U.S.

The future of Europe – simplify, simplify; Open Democracy
The
European project is in difficulty, but the remedies of Castells
and Perissich are not the answer. Europe needs, not an emphasis
on networks or immediate benefits, but democratic simplicity.
A focus on the core activities and rules that can add value
to people’s lives opens the way to a creative rethink of the
fundamentals of the Union. |

Where
Will Europe Go in the 21st Century?. Special from TIME.COM
At
the dawn of the new millennium, the chances for European solidarity
have never been greater. But daunting obstacles remain: chaos
in Russia, ethnic strife in the Balkans, an economic slow-down
in the West. Will the euro, which became the European Union's
new currency on January 1, be enough to hold at least part
of Europe together?
