The International Year of Mountains is an opportunity to take steps to protect mountain ecosystems, to promote peace and stability in mountain regions and to help mountain people attain their goals and aspirations. By taking care of the world's mountains, we help to ensure the long-term security and survival of all that is connected to them, including ourselves.

Mountain Forum

The Mountain Forum promotes global action toward equitable and ecologically sustainable mountain development. This is achieved through information sharing, mutual support and advocacy. In order to achieve these objectives the Mountain Forum uses modern and traditional communications, supports networking and capacity building and encourages members to be proactive in advocating sustainable development of mountain areas.

 

International Year of Mountains 2002

Bishkek Global Mountain Summit

The Bishkek Global Mountain Summit will be the feature event of the International Year of Mountains, drawing together the ideas and recommendations generated by previous events, from all levels and sectors of society, into proposals for concrete action.

 

UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre

The UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre was established in 2000 as the world biodiversity information and assessment centre of the United Nations Environment Programme.

Euromontana

Euromontana is a European association for co-operation between mountain regions. It brings together regional and national organisations of mountain people: social-professional organisations, in particular agriculture, rural development centres, associations, territorial authorities, research institutes, etc. It includes organisations from Western Europe as well as from Central and Eastern European countries in an effort to develop international co-operation in anticipation of the enlargement of the European Union.

 

 

AEM European Association of Elected Representatives from Mountain Areas

The actions carried out by the AEM to promote a mountain policy are aimed at developing and implementing a policy of sustainable development for the mountain regions at pan-European, Community, national and regional level.
