Polycentric Development Model: A Basis for Better Accessibility

Based on an actual Spanish Potential Population Areas map

Map clearly shows big population centres, axes and demographic gaps

Core identifies, by circle rims, the location of the most important nodes, whereas small circles identify medium- sized cities

TENs will link big centres reinforcing the policentric model. Secondary network will serve to link small and medium-sized cities with TENs nodes

Efficient and Sustainable Use of Infrastructure

Based on two actual maps: variation of Potential Population areas and Accesibility. Clearly shows the most dynamic spaces jointly with their good or bad accesibility. Both are represented in a Polulation Potentials map whereas distances are calculated according the actual existing infraestructures. Therefore, development axes and lanes are easily represented (integrated infraestructure planning). Spheres volumes are proportional to total population

Urban – Rural Partneship

Population and density in 1998, have been represented using spheres proportional to number of population and density by colour tonalities. So that the result shows in what manner both local problems need regional solutions and those must maintain an integrated approach between cities and countryside. The area corresponds to an abandoned minery region in northern Spain in which population has dramatically decreased from 60’ s-70 when those exploitations were closed.

An integrated Approach for Improved Transport Links and Access to Knowledge

The population map with 1998 data served to represent how different scales urban centres in central – northern Spain need to be efficiently linked to one another in order to strength its competitive situation and hence encouraging efficient access to transport, telecommunications and other infrastructures in a complementary way. The size of spheres evidences the total amount of population in each municipality. In this way we could introduce easily the problem.
